This Day In June is a wonderful introduction for younger children to the idea of diversity and acceptance. The middle pages tend to have one overall color identifying with one particular aspect- or issue- of the LBGTQ community, pink, blue and red are the most noticeable. There is a lot going on in the background, signs, celebrations, but they are done only in colored outlines so it doesn’t draw attention from the main attraction- the parade. There are only two short sentences on each page, and each one has specific meaning as explained in the notes in the back of the book. Impressionsįirst of all I love that this book covers a topic that can be controversial in a very simple, beautiful way. Included as well is a discussion suggestion/guide on how to talk with kids ranging in ages 3-18 about LBGTQ questions they may have. This Day In June includes end notes explaining the origination of Pride Parades and the meaning of the phrases used on each page. It’s a warm June day, and a very colorful parade is about to start! Within a few years it fell, nay, it swandived, into the filthiest of sewers, it became caked with disgust and it revelled in relentless cruelty. It started out here, the very first of the 30, with a most unscary black cat on the cover, and with some kind of literary aspirations. From 1958 to 1988 The Pan Book of Horror Stories was the annual British gorefest. The movie opens as theatrically as it means to continue, with the adult David (a smashing Dev Patel) introducing himself to a packed theater audience before stepping, quite literally, into his past to view his birth. Restructuring some story arcs and jettisoning others, Iannucci and his collaborator, Simon Blackwell, have created a souped-up, trimmed-down adaptation so fleet and entertaining that its cleverness doesn’t immediately register. A wordsmith of uncommon force and fluidity, Iannucci might be one of the few writers undeterred by this doorstop of a tale about one man’s bumpy journey from infancy to middle age. Armando Iannucci? The Scottish satirist and king of the blisteringly profane diatribe? Surely not. “The Personal History of David Copperfield” - the umpteenth stab at visualizing Charles Dickens’s favorite novel - is so sincere in its telling and so innocently buoyant in its presentation that I had to do a double-take on the writing and directing credits. What made the experience of listening to The Séance the most enjoyable? Now the Hall belongs to Constance, and she must descend into the darkness at the heart of the Wraxford mystery to find the truth - even at the cost of her life. Years before, a family disappeared at Wraxford Hall, a decaying mansion in the English countryside with a sinister reputation. Constance's bequest comes in two parts: a house and a mystery. It is a world of apparitions, of disappearances and unnatural phenomena, of betrayal and blackmail and black-hearted villains - and of murder. So begins this brilliant and gripping novel, a dark mystery set in late-Victorian England. Constance is left alone, her only legacy a mysterious bequest that will blight her life. Desperate to coax her mother back to health, Constance takes her to a séance perhaps she will find comfort from beyond the grave.
